T.A.W.S.
(TRAVELLING AUSTRALIA WITH SQUAREDANCERS)
T.A.W.S. National Co-ordinators:
Mal & Chris Parrington:
Email: malnchris@bigpond.com
Leighton & Sandra Bloomfield:
Email: smbloomfield1@optushome.com.au
T.A.W.S. was initially suggested by a group of dancers who attended the Anniversary Caravan & Camping weekend at the Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre, Buderim, Queensland in August 2006.
The inaugural meeting of T.A.W.S. was held at the 48th Australian National Square Dance Convention in Adelaide, South Australia, in June 2007 where a large group of interested dancers attended to find out more about T.A.W.S. It was a huge success, and attendees unanimously agreed that the formation of TAWS should proceed.
Co-ordinating Committee
A TAWS National Co-ordinating committee was subsequently formed to co-ordinate activities, receive & distribute information to members, maintain a register of members, and receive and distribute monies as required. The TAWS National
Co-ordinating committee comprises the following personnel:
Joint National Co-Ordinators:
Mal & Chris Parrington (SA)
Leighton & Sandra Bloomfield (Qld)
State Representatives :
Queensland Leighton & Sandra Bloomfield- smbloomfield1@optushome.com.au
New South Wales Don & Robyn Craine - robynanddon@e-access.com.au
ACT Craig & Marilyn Gardner - cra2mar@grapevine.net.au
Victoria Alan & Helen Curtis – ahcurtis@dcsi.net.au
South Australia Mal & Chris Parrington - malnchris@bigpond.com
Western Australia Colin & Margaret Brown – godosado@aapt.net.au
Tasmania John & Pamela Cornell - jpcornell@bigpond.com
Objective and Purpose
The Objective and Purpose of T.A.W.S. is to provide an opportunity for, and to encourage those interested in, both modern square dancing and travelling to combine these two activities for mutual enjoyment.
Aims
The aims of TAWS is, but not limited to:

• The further development of camaraderie amongst travelling square dancers,
• The establishment of a data base of square dance friendly holiday/tourist parks throughout the nation, and
• The production and publication of a National Diary of Events
Membership of T.A.W.S.
Membership of T.A.W.S. is open to all persons who have an interest in modern square dancing and travelling.
Membership of TAWS is Free
Current membership is growing steadily and is expected to increase in the future.
Annual/General Meetings
The Annual General Meeting of TAWS will be scheduled as a part of each Australian National Square Dance Convention, subject to the approval of the Convention Committee.
General meetings will be convened at the discretion of the National Co-Ordinating Comittee
Communications
The preferred means of communication is by E-mail as this is considered to be the most cost effective and quickest means of disseminating information to members. All communication to members by email is via Blind Carbon Copy (Bcc) such that privacy is preserved,
Notices of special TAWS events will also be posted on club notice boards throughout Australia.
National Diary of Events
A national “TAWS Diary of Events” has been produced and is updated and emailed to T.A.W.S. members on a monthly basis.
Joining TAWS
Why not join TAWS and share in the fun and development of this exciting organization; please contact any one of the
National Co-Ordinating Committee, listed above.

LEARNING TO SQUARE DANCE
November 22, 2007
This is an extract of correspondence I received from Jim Pead in the USA. It appears that his comments’ regarding learners applies to South Australian clubs and I suspect many other parts of the world. Just how do we expand our diminishing numbers?
“As 1 said last month, leading a square dance club is more work than we expected and imagined. Fortunately, Betsy is absolutely excellent at detail work and is keeping track of schedules, events, callers, and almost everything else.
She has me do the announcements at club! That is really no small thing for there are a myriad of people to thank and recognize for their efforts. Truly our club members are all dedicated and make great efforts on behalf of the Lake Livingston Levis and Lace.
Our fall class is off to a good start. If you recall “the lady in the white pickup,” her name is Freda and she has come several times. It is difficult to impress on the newer dancers the importance of regular attendance. They see it as a new and fun activity, in which they partake, but do not see the importance of being there each and every week to hone their skills and ability to dance. That is when square dancing gets to be really fun, when you can accurately follow the calls.
One of the most fun couples we have are Ty and Brenda Martindale. Brenda is the activities director at Escapees and keeps a busy schedule herself When we first approached them about learning to dance, she was reluctant. Then it developed that Ty, in a prior life, had been a square dancer! She is determined to learn to dance and “catch up” with Ty.
We are trying to develop incentives for the newer students to really bond with the club. We include the students in all activities, not just the dancing. For instance, we will be having a major dance in November, our annual Thanksgiving dance. It has always been successful before, drawing good numbers of people. This is our major fund-raiser for the year, so it is important to draw a good crowd. The club members are all asked to either cook turkeys or a ham, and bring two side dishes per couple. A little further down the road we will have a “Toys for Tots” dance, and a Christmas dance. Frankly it is a lot to keep track of and Betsy is doing a super job.”
As James Read (James who?) said– square dancing is great socially and provides excellent cardio vascular exercise. How can we attract new dancers? Should we go into competition with fitness centres? What do our readers think?
